Breaking in the lefse grill

April 25, 2009 | Family,Norway,Stuff

Yes, I got a lefse grill last year.

Shiny, huh? No, I haven’t used it. Well, I hadn’t used it until my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and niece were here from Norway. Here we are (MIL & me) in all our aproned glory. And, yes, I’m pretending to know what’s going on.

Here’s the lefse recipe.

Here’s everything else.

Yum!

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne

January 6, 2009 | 2008,2009,Family,Friends,New Year,Stuff

I’ve heard so many people say about last year, “Good riddance!” and “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” Yeah, 2008 sucked in many ways. Even so, I’m … grateful.

Don’t worry. I’m not going permanently smarmy. I have plenty of complaints and pessimism to last the rest of the year. But for now, I’m grateful.

In a year where losses piled on losses, I have so much. I have a wonderful husband who still loves me after all these years. I have three beautiful children. I live closer to the rest of my family than I ever have before. I have shelter, warmth, companionship and love.

Wishing you all of this and more … happy New Year.

Books: Hold on to Your Kids

December 22, 2008 | Books,Family,Parenting

I recently read Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More than Peers by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D., and Gabor Maté, M.D.

I picked it up because Izzy mentioned it. She said Christina recommended it to her.

Good book.

Los Lonely Boys: Always

December 3, 2008 | Family,Los Lonely Boys,Music,Stuff

After listening to Superman, oh, 5,394 times, the kids were finally interested in hearing what else is on LLB’s Forgiven CD. I picked Always, my favorite, and now they call it “Mommy’s song.” They like it because the tune reminds them of the Curious George song. But my son also listens to the lyrics and realizes it’s a love song.

“Is this the song at your wedding, Mommy?”

“No, but it would have been a good one, huh?”

All together now: Awwwwwww.

Campbell Brown: No Bias. No Bull.

December 2, 2008 | Campbell Brown,Family,Journalism,Media,MSM,Politics,Television

I’ve seen Campbell Brown on television for years. I watched her (on and off) do election coverage during the campaign, and I saw her “free Sarah Palin” opinion piece.

Then I caught one of her first No Bias. No Bull. shows, where she said she planned to hold President-elect Barack Obama accountable for all the promises he made during the campaign. I thought, yeah, OK, we’ll see. Then I never watched again. Oh, I planned to watch and even programmed the show into my DVR. But I never got around to watching.

Then I caught about three minutes of tonight’s show, where she takes on Gov. Edward G. Rendell, D-Pa., for perpetuating stereotypes about women. He said that Gov. Janet Napolitano, D-Ariz., would be perfect for the job of Secretary of Homeland Security (she’s Obama’s nominee for the job) because she “has no life” and “has no family.”

Hmm. I might have to check out the ones left on my machine.

More reasons we don’t have a pet armadillo

July 19, 2008 | Family,Stuff

I mentioned over at my Being Savvy: Tampa blog that my son asked, “Would an armadillo be a good pet?

I said it wouldn’t because an armadillo is a wild animal.

Yesterday, we “ran across” a couple more reasons.

1) It doesn’t do well in traffic.

2) It attracts vultures.

Yes, that’s on our street. No, I did not hit the armadillo with my car.

What happens 72 hours before you have to put your house up for sale?

July 14, 2008 | Family,Stuff

Artwork on the wall.

And the stairway.

And the door.

And the alarm.

Heck, I wasn’t even in the shower when that happened. I just had the telephone glued to my ear all day, talking with the bank, the other bank and the realtor, trying to meet another 72-hour deadline.

By the way, anyone looking to buy a house in Tampa? Because I have one for sale. Yep, we’re moving. Here’s the door to our new house. Can you guess where it is?

(For those of you I’ve already told, you don’t get a guess.)

We move in one month!

Stay tuned.

Living in a Noggin-Google world

July 3, 2008 | Family,Stuff,Traveling,Vacation

Conversation overheard between two cousins during our family vacation.

5-year-old: “Do you have Noggin?”

6-year-old:“Umm, no. [pause] Do you have Google?”
