Blackbirds
Listen up, yo. I’m sure you think of yourselves like this. Sorta poetic and all.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.
I’ll tell you what, though. You keep trying to build a nest in my dryer vent? I’ll be singing this song.
Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.
Fair warning.

Flies
In case anyone thought I was joking with the plague references, here’s what just one (of half a dozen) flypaper strip caught in a matter of hours, and the ones not caught still swarm and divebomb you when you walk in the room. Just another sign of spring, I guess, although I like the daffodils better.

Sign of Spring, 2
We saw these ducks cross the street, so we went back to see where they went. Not sure how far away from home they are.

Sign of Spring
I saw the first Winnebago on the road yesterday. It’s like seeing the first robin in these parts.

Buh-bye
You’re what? Snow. Girl. Melted! (a la B-52s)
Yep. Here lies what’s left of Snowgirl. Look closely. That’s her cute little carrot nose and stick arms. That pile of snow in the middle is, I think, what’s left of her pretty hat. So long, Snowgirl.
I’d feel more smug about telling her not to let the door hit her on the way out, but I don’t think she and her pal Old Man Winter are done with us yet. That’s right. Snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Oh well. At least we had two glorious days with 50 degrees.

If I gave you pretty flowers
These are for Amie. Her peonies bloomed before mine even got started. I promised to prolong the blooms by sending her pictures of mine. Here ya go.

I’m looking at you through my window
I put pictures together of the robin’s nest in our window for the kids to take to school. They brought them home, and we looked through them again. They asked if the nest was empty now. I said, yes, it was. About 10 minutes later, one of them came running to me, “Mommy, Mommy, come and see! There are four eggs in the nest!”
What? Are you kidding? Nope.
There are four more eggs in the nest. Here we go again.

Update 9 on robins
I saw the bird first thing in the morning and wondered if he would spend another day in the nest. Next time I looked, I found an empty nest. I was all excited for the little bird. A little sad too.

Update 8 on robins
Both mom and dad birds hover near the nest, chirping away. I imagine they say something like, “Your brothers and sisters all took off, went to school, graduated from college, got jobs and started families of their own, and here you sit. Why don’t you get out there and get a job?”
And he’s all, “Nah. I’m good. Oh, hey, could you bring me another worm while you’re up?”
And they do.
