Spring?
We’re getting antsy. We are SO ready for spring. During spring break last week, we had a taste of it, then another shot of winter, then a touch of spring again. I hope we’re almost there.
The temperature was past 50 degrees on Thursday.

It made the beer taste even better. Remember my sun dogs? Yeah. This is my beer dog. Woof.

We had bikes.

And bubbles.

And flies. Don’t forget the flies. We opened the barn door, and they practically swarmed out of there.

We can see the snow fence again.

And the benches.

We were feeling pretty good. Then, bam. The next day we got snow. Boo.

But things looked better on the weekend. Temperatures were still low — in the 30s but creeping up to barely 40. But the sunshine was wonderful.
We had soccer.

And the start of flowers. Did you hear that? I think those are angels singing.

And follow the leader.

And swings and sunglasses.

And bikes.

Come on, spring. Can’t you see we love you? Pull up a chair and set a spell.

Buh-bye

You’re what? Snow. Girl. Melted! (a la B-52s)
Yep. Here lies what’s left of Snowgirl. Look closely. That’s her cute little carrot nose and stick arms. That pile of snow in the middle is, I think, what’s left of her pretty hat. So long, Snowgirl.
I’d feel more smug about telling her not to let the door hit her on the way out, but I don’t think she and her pal Old Man Winter are done with us yet. That’s right. Snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Oh well. At least we had two glorious days with 50 degrees.

Footprints

The kids and I saw footprints in the snow one morning before school. We hadn’t seen any animals around, so it was a mystery how they got there. We’ve had various critters around — deer, skunk, raccoon. It would be interesting to figure out what had wandered around our house in the snow.
After school, we went out to track the prints. They stopped with tire tracks. Did Pappa have an animal in his pickup? We didn’t think so. They went a little ways past the garage but not all the way down the driveway. They stopped before the snow in the yard. We saw them along the side of the house, though, to the door into the garage. I remembered feeling horrible for the delivery guy who had to tromp through the snow I hadn’t had time to clear yet. Aha! The delivery guy. He must have had a dog. Mystery solved.

Rule No. 2 about Iowa winters
Never, under any circumstances, ever, say, “You know? We’ve gotten so much snow, we can’t possibly get more … can we?” Because when you do? You will.

Oops. How’d that get in there?

There’s a snow fence under there.

See?

Every time you build a snow fort for the kids?

The next day, a blizzard will blow through and close it up. Every. Damn. Time.

That’s a bench under there.

There too.

Here, you can see better without all the snow.

With snow.

Without.

With snow.

Without.

With snow.

Without.

This drift is up to my armpits.

This one’s as tall as I am.

There’s a sidewalk under there somewhere.

Up to my knee in snow.

Driving conditions.

The mailman delivered today!

He had to walk through this! I don’t
think he gets paid enough.

I’ve lost count of the snow days
The school jinxed it when it sent a note home last week that said, “Beginning Monday, Feb. 8, we will be adding 30 minutes to our school day for the rest of the 2009-2010 school year.” You know. To make up for a gazillion snow days.
Which means, of course, that Monday, Feb. 8, was a SNOW DAY.
Yep. Sure enough. I bet Tuesday, Feb. 9 is too.
I tried to post photos, but WordPress is being all hinky. Will try again tomorrow.
We got an invitation to a wedding in the Bahamas in May. I’m SO wishing we could go NOW and hang out until the wedding.
PSA: For anyone who thinks I complain too much: Go away. Nothing to see here. We got nothing but unicorns and rainbows in these parts. Yay. Whee. Can’t wait for more snow. Whoo-hoo.
